Cake Decorating Homemade or Store Bought Essay - 702 Words

There are so many reasons to need a cake; from birthdays to weddings and everything in-between. When a cake is needed; the first question I ask myself is, do I make it or go to the store? Sometimes we order a cake when we need one; pre-made and decorated. Other times we make them and their decorations. Depending on the circumstances in which the cake is needed one of the choices may work more effectively. How does someone know to buy or make a cake? There is a lot to consider when choosing to make a cake with love or buy one from the store. One thing we should think about when we need a cake; is the amount of time we have to get it where it needs to be. When someone buys a cake they have two choices when it comes to time. They can pick†¦show more content†¦Same with the decorations and what is used to make them. Small homemade decorated cakes can also very in price. But at a 10-20 dollar margin it is still the cheapest way to go. Something else that is important to this dec ision to bake or buy are taste and texture. When buying a cake at stores; in my experience, the frosting is way too sweet or hard as a rock. Another thing stores do is use those hard pieces of colored sugar to decorate. They also use those edible sheets to print pictures on and slap them on the cake. In my opinion they both taste terrible. When choosing to make decorations there are way more choices for ingredients and flavors. Any candy, cookie or pretzel we can imagine can be used to decorate a cake. I learned many tricks for decorating from Cake Boss on TLC. From making rock candy for coral to sculpting rice crispy treats into various shapes and covering them in modeling chocolate. Most food taste better when made at home instead of the store; this goes for cake decorations. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder; (so they say) and this is true for either cake/decorating choice. If the cake is store bought it should look presentable (be easy on the eyes) and if it does not look nic e get your money back. When making decorations for a cake take breaks when needed. So stress does not take over the fun. Also we should try not to be so hard on ourselves if something we are making does not turn out right. The United States Has The Largest Prison Population In

The United States has the largest prison population in the world, but fails to perform the duties of successful correctional facilities. The lack of rehabilitation leads to unsuccessful reintegration into society as people released from prison are soon sent back for committing yet another crime, contributing to a violent crime rate of 372.6 per 100,000 inhabitants in the US in 2015 (FBI National Press Office, 2016). According to the US Department of Justice, more than 10,000 convicted criminals are released from US prisons each week and approximately two-thirds of them are rearrested within three years (2015). We must fix the US prison system because I fear that by releasing ex-convicts from prison without properly rehabilitating them and†¦show more content†¦Further, in order to lower the recidivism rate, ex-convicts must receive some sort of help to successfully reintegrate into society upon release. The successful rehabilitation of convicted criminals and the successful p risoner reintegration into society would ultimately lead to a safer and more capable society by lowering the recidivism rate, making those the policy goals and outcomes the ones that matter most. I chose to study Norway’s prison policy because I have heard that Norway has the most humane prisons in the world and I wished to research what that meant and how successful those humane policies really are. Norway is worth looking at because their recidivism rate is very low, suggesting that their prison policy is successful. According to the World Prison Brief, Institute for Criminal Policy Research, in 2016, the incarceration rate in Norway was 74 per 100,000 inhabitants, based on an estimated national population of 5.25 million, resulting in a total prison population of 3,874; the occupancy level of their prisons is 89.9%. The Biggest Migration in Global History Free Essays

In 1886, the Statue of â€Å"Liberty Enlightening the World,† a gift from the people of France, was dedicated by President Grover Cleveland. Set at the entrance of New York, the statue was just in time to greet the biggest migration in global history. Between the years of 1860-1910, more than twenty-two million immigrants had entered the country . We will write a custom essay sample on The Biggest Migration in Global History or any similar topic only for you Order Now This influx of immigration became known as the New Immigration. Industrialization had taken over agriculture and American industries were experiencing one of their greatest booms, thus a greater demand for workers . Immigrants from all over Europe came in hopes of securing for themselves money to return home with, or in some cases, a permanent position in a country of abundant opportunity. Although this increase in immigration eventually led to restrictive immigration laws, ultimately, this group of â€Å"New Immigrants† not only provided a much-needed economic service, but also added to the diversity of our â€Å"melting-pot† country. The promise of immediate employment and political and economic freedom were more than enough reasons to entice immigrants to come to the United States; in 1864, some 194,000 immigrants landed in America . Until 1897, ninety percent of all overseas immigrants arrived mostly from northern and western Europe, primarily from Great Britain, Ireland, Germany, and Scandinavia . Most of these new immigrants came from lands with democratic traditions and education systems and were welcomed by the native-born Americans because they possessed much needed industrial skills. The new immigrants, primarily the Scandinavians, used the Homestead Act to receive land in the Midwest and start small farms . They had families and skills to offer and were not a migrant group; they planned to stay and make it in America. However, by 1905, partially encouraged by the new technology of steamships and cheaper ocean passage rates, the number of immigrants had risen to 1,285,000 people annually . More than a million immigrants arrived in each of the years 1905, 1907, and 1910, some fleeing the â€Å"pogroms† (organized massacres) taking place in Eastern Europe, and others seeking a life that they could never have within the borders of their poverty-stricken countries . These later immigrants, arriving from southern and eastern Europe, were Czechs, Poles, Ukrainians, Serbs, Slovaks and Russian, as well as Italians, Greeks, Hungarians, and Rumanians. Approximately ten percent of them were Jews fleeing from the repressive policies of Czarist Russia under Alexander III, although Roman and Orthodox Catholics were among the arrivals . The masses of immigrants were overwhelming. By 1887, it became obvious that Castle Garden (immigrant receiving station) was too small to process the large numbers of immigrants pouring into the country . Castle Garden had because so small, that criminals were simply hanging out at the receiving station to rob the immigrants inside, instead of waiting for them to get on the streets. Thus, the government built Ellis Island and immigrants continued pouring in. The number of immigrants was so great that by 1910 immigrants and their families composed over half the total population of 18 major cities . In Chicago, eight out of ten residents were immigrants or children of immigrants . The response to these newcomers was unfriendly and inhospitable. The Americans who saw their job security challenged by immigrants that were willing to work longer hours for lower wages did not welcome them. The newcomers did not have the same culture as the first immigrants that had come from Northern and Western Europe. Most lacked skills and very few spoke English, some could not read or write in any language. The Slavic and Polish (excluding Jewish) immigrant groups were viewed as unskilled, illiterate, and transient and were seen as a bigger threat to American institutions than the other European ethnic groups. They were not ambitious people, tended to keep to themselves, and were opposed to the American idea of materialism. Many of the Slavs and Poles distrusted American public schools; they withdrew their children from school and encouraged them to seek training in a trade, thus allowing a high rate of dropouts. Likewise, Italians were discriminated against because they also provided cheap labor and, naturally of a clannish nature, tended to move and settle as a group in Italian communities where they only worked with fellow countrymen and did not learn the ways of urban life. Americans thought that Italians did not assimilate into the American culture well since they held on their old-country traditions and cultures so strongly. Assimilation was important to the Americans because they were fearful of the change that came with other cultures, not to mention their resentment towards the new languages already replacing English in several parts of the cities. The Italians also brought the Mafia, which although in Italy enforced justice, came under the control of criminals in the US, and became known for racketeering, blackmail, and extortion. The immigrants were blamed for creating disorder and violence in the cities, and in general, were thought to be â€Å"birds of passage† who would use the American economy to make their fortunes, then return to their native land taking American dollars. The ever-growing influx of immigrants disturbed many native-born Americans who were annoyed by the newcomers† appearance and way of life. They expected these people, no matter what their place of origin, to conform to Anglo-Saxon patterns of behavior and to cherish the institutions of America. These anti-immigrant, nativist, sentiments, and the hatred and prejudice toward these immigrants led to the passing of immigration laws that greatly restricted the flow of immigration . The first restrictive law prevented immigration of lunatics, criminals, polygamists, people with diseases, and those likely to be public charges. In August of 1882, the first federal immigration law was adopted. This law put a head tax on all immigrant passengers. In February of 1885, a law prohibiting the importation of contract labor, called the Foran Act, was enacted. In 1906, leaders of the Boston Immigration Restriction League used the arguments of racial superiority to limit immigration. Finally, in 1924, the Fundamentalists succeeded in passing the National Origins act, which allowed the US to restrict the number of immigrants to 164,000 a year, and also favor immigrants from Western Europe over those from Eastern Europe . Many American believed that these immigration restrictions were necessary to keep the American institution cities from deteriorating. The population living in cities of over 30,000 increased from ten percent of the total in 1860 to more than twenty-five percent of the total US population by 1900 . The pressure of the tremendous inflow of immigrants quickly outstripped the ability of the nation†s established institutions to cope with them. Already poor in the Old Country, for the most part, they arrived in America penniless and made their homes in the growing tenements of America†s major cities. The severe strain on the housing situation coupled with discriminatory practices eventually led to the creation of ghettos. Women and children were often sent to work to contribute to the survival of the family, old-world views that eventually led to wholesale exploitation of child labor. Poverty on a never-before-seen scale became the norm in America†s urban centers. Perplexed, poor, and lacking knowledge of the American lifestyle, these immigrants were used as a low-paid labor force for dirty jobs that nobody else wanted and felt the harshness of Industrialism the most. They did not know their bosses, class animosity often divided management and labor, and their interests and wants were of little concern to the corporations. Because these people did not have the proper education, many of them remained unskilled or semi-unskilled throughout their lives. Although many could not attain the work skills they needed, they gained many other things. By the early 1900†³s, ninety percent of those who could not speak English learned to do so in less than ten years after they arrived, and only a third was still illiterate . Despite their many hardships, the new immigrants were determined to make it in the New World. For example, the Slavs† ability to take the worst jobs and stick with them enabled them to become one of the top two ethnic groups representing employees of America†s leading industries . It was the clashing of old-world views with those of new-world ideas that forced compromises that helped to advance social and political thoughts. The cities would not have grown without people to provide cheap labor in the factories, and it was the willingness to provide a cheap source of labor and to work the most difficult and menial jobs that helped enable the United Stated to make the economic gains that she made. The next objective of the paper is to the innovative aspect of taking use of social networks for achieving increased customer engagement. Another objective is to have insights about the several disadvantages and advantages of taking use of social networks in the businesses by the means of diverse literature and research work of different authors. Literature Review: Social Network Several numbers of authors and researchers have a diverse set of views in explaining the actual concept of social network but from the combined view it can be explained as the inter-personal connection or relationship between the people, various business enterprises and the organisations. There is a flow of information among all these but there is no hierarchy or any sort of set order. Almost all the organisation takes use of social networking as one of their key marketing tactic. But taking sue of social networks as the marketing strategy requires effective understanding of the concept as well as its associated merits and demerits (Kadushin, 2012). The concepts if social networking can also be understand from the business context where there is an online application through which the customers have an interaction various business enterprises. It includes development of the business content and its effective sharing. Earlier the business organisation take use of the traditional media but it has limited advantages and to overcome the weaknesses of traditional media, the businesses started taking sue of social media which acts as one of the strongest promotional and marketing tool for the businesses. There various social networks for developing business connections, for marketing, for promotion, for business expansion and for selling of products and services (Pinho and Prange, 2016). From the era of late 1990s, there was initiated the use of social networks, web blogging and posting. And with the span of time, there was increased use of social networking platforms, social applications and social media which supported the flow of communication between diverse set of individuals across the globe through some of the renowned social networking sites (Gloora, et al. 2016). The literature will present the significance of taking sue of social networking in the businesses as well as some of the disadvantages of taking use of these social networks. Literature Review Comparative Analysis Authors and researchers have their diverse views regarding the use of social networks in the businesses. As per the views of Park, Valenzuela and Kee, there are numerous benefits of social networking such as the extended customer base. Insufficiency of capital is always considered as a strong barricade in the path of success and growth of the business enterprises and because of the same, the organisations do not achieve the desired market business sustainability and success (Park, Kee and Valenzuela, 2009). Celine explains that the primary reason behind the less customers and decreased market visibility is the shortage of investments. But the author also highlights the importance of social media platforms and networks for achieving international visibility with squat capital only. Targeting the customers and having global reach is getting increasingly feasible with the use of social networks and internet. Therefore, the author concludes that the use of social networks offer support i n growing the business and achieving increased attention of the potential customers (Celine, 2012). Another advantage as emphasized by Kirti? and Karahan is the available opportunity offered by social networking to have an easy and supple entry in the global market. To expand the business operations in international regions and to enter the global market is extremely difficult for the organisations and social networking offers the advantage to these organisations to enhance flexibility and enter the new markets by achieving recognized presence of these social platforms and by taking sue of social media (Kirti? and Karahan, 2011). In the social networking and business through the online platforms and social media, all kind of entry restricts as well as the international trade barriers have vanished and there has been achieved an extended area for performing business by the organisations. The most vital and significant advantage of such social networking nd social platform is that there is no kind of fees or any other capital investment associated with such business operations and th is empowers the businesses to compete with the global players. It is also analyzed by the researchers Siamagka, Christodoulides and Michaelidou that the social networking also assist in achieving enhanced brand reliability. There is also a benefit that the organisations can attain more number of international customers for the products and services by the means of social networking. The potential customers when attached to a brand usually have brand reliability by repurchasing from the similar brand due to global visibility, increased brand recognition and enhanced customer involvement (Castells, 2015). The researchers also explain other benefiters of taking sue of social networks in term of having a more strategic outlook and move as the social sites and networks helps in fetching the information about the products and strategies of the competitors and with such information, the organisation try to have more competitive approaches for retaining the customers (Michaelidou, Siamagka and Christodoulides, 2011). It also helps the businesses to have increased competitive benefits. Thus, the literature emphasis upon the key benefits such as increased global presence, upsurge competitive benefits and long term sustainability (Valente, 2010). Some of the authors such as Huysman, Steinfield and Leonardi have highlighted the benefits of social networking of having increased customer engagement, involvement and enhanced building of association with the customers. For the growth and development of every business, there is a need to have extended social networks and customer involvement. In the same manner, with the social networks, the companies used to have an in-depth and strong bond with the customers through the various approaches of customer engagement (Leonardi, Huysman and Steinfield, 2013). Lee, Cheung and Chiu also explain the benefits of social networking of a two way communication. With the help of the social networks, there is a way to build up a relationship with the customers and have their enhanced engagement of the customers. The customers share their feedbacks, reviews and experiences to the companies by the means of string social networks and customer involvement (Cheung, Chiu and Lee, 2011). Such robust ass ociation with the customers supports the businesses in attaining loyal and trustworthy customers. Because of strong customer engagement, it becomes difficult for the customers to switch to different products of diverse brands. Other diverse advantages of social networking for businesses is that it supports the businesses to diversify the key operation and business function as due to free from the burden of capital expenses, the business can easily have a conversion process (Parveen, 2012). The research and literature also presents some negative aspects or disadvantages of taking use of social networks in the businesses. The first and the primary negative implication is the negative feedback reviews for the products and services of the organisations (Bharadwaj, et al., 2013). It takes few minutes to destroy and deteriorate the brand image of the organisation and the products of the customers post any kind of negative feedbacks or reviews on the social media platforms (Gronum, Verreynne and Kastelle, 2012). It is a key drawback of taking use of social networking in the businesses. In the online world as well as in international business, it is necessary to have brand development and growth for achieving more number of customers (Shabbir, Ghazi and Mehmood, 2016). With the negative comments and feedbacks of the customers, there is decline brand image of the business and this is also a strong negative point from competitive aspect. By getting impacted and influenced with s uch comments and reviews, the other potential customers also turned as the non-buyers and do not purchase services or products from those specific brands that have negative customer reviews (Sashi, 2012). Therefore, due to social networks and increased use of social platforms, the businesses have a risk of getting the brand image ruined because of negative customer reviews and feedbacks. There are few other negative implications also of using social networks in the businesses which have been highlighted in the literature by numerous authors. It has been analyzed that consumption of time is another negative or demerit of social networking in the businesses (Batjargal, et al., 2013). The literature and the researchers argues the benefit of social networking of less capital investment, they emphasized upon the exhaustion of time of the businesses. In building networks, maintaining them and also managing the reviews of the customers, it is essential for the organisation to invest a lot of time in these networking sites which distracts their focus from other key activities (Chabaud and Ngijol, 2016). The businesses need much time and attempt to achieve increase social visibility. It is seen that not all the organisations possess huge number of workers and extensive capital and teams for managing the social presence and social networks and thus the inefficiency in the mana gement results in decreased business performance which is a demerit of using social networks in the businesses (Treem and Leonardi, 2013). Therefore, the lack of time acts as a barricade in the success of the businesses. The next disadvantage of social networking is the squat knowledge of using social networking in the business. The efficiency and effectiveness in implementing the use of social media, social platforms and social networks in businesses requires extensive knowledge and potential (Chaffey, 2016). The one of the most key issue of taking sue of the social networks is to the social network selection as the success of the organization through social media completely depends upon the social networking application approach as per the needs and requisite of the organisations and the products and the services. There are bundle of social media applications, platforms and networks but selecting the best one is a challenge for the businesses (Wamba and Carter, 2016). Selection of an ineffective and inappropriate social network may lead to negative impact over the organisations. Therefore, it is necessary for the businesses to have in-depth analysis and evaluation of the social networks so that the businesses can be utmost benefitted by its application (Fox and Moreland, 2015). Currency and the quality of the Literature source The sources used for framing the literature review are primarily the journal articles as well as the peer reviewed one that are authentic in nature and are easily feasible from the vast academic data available at Google Scholar. These sources have a relevant and robust connection with the data presented in the literature review. Maximum of the sources are of current years so atht there relevancy can be judged. The literature offers a clear set of discussion, comparative analysis and also the diverse view of the authors. Data presented has a significant relevance with the application of social networking in the businesses and the organisations. Research gap and contribution From the overall literature, there has also identified a research gap that there is no sort of accuracy in terms of results and outcomes attained by the organisations of taking use of social networks. In the researches and literature, the merits and demerits have been analyzed but in practical scenario there can be more number of advantages and disadvantages that have not been recognized in the literature. The literature also have a significant contribution as it helps in comprehending the manner in which social networks can help the businesses in achieving more customer bases and increased promotion. The social networking includes various activities such as marketing through content, customer involvement, blog posts, videos, customer feedbacks, images, etc. Another contribution offered is the opportunity for the business enterprises to change the business operations and function through a better chance for conversion (Molina?Morales and Martnez?Fernndez, 2010). Other contributions are that it can help in achieving strong global visibility through squat level of investments and no further expenses, in attaining extensive customer base, upsurge promotions and marketing and diversification of the services and products (Edosomwan, et al., 2011). Conclusion In the current business sector, the significance of social networking is continuously rising and extending as it is one of the major source for developing the businesses. The business enterprises have their high emphasis upon talking use of the social networking in the business functions for primarily increasing the number of customers associated with brand. Use of social networks in present time is a very usual and common feature in the lives of people. The above literature presented concludes that there are numerous merits and positive outcomes that are linked with the social networking application in the businesses and it also highlighted the negative aspects too according to view and research of the authors. The insights drawn from the literature states that, the usage of social networking is one of the most vital elements for the success of the businesses. There has been analyzed and concluded in brief several positive implications of social networking in businesses that compris es of international reach, conversion opportunity, increased number of customers, brand reliability, competitive edge, and enhanced advertising and promotions. As per the conclusions drawn from the literature, it can be stated that the businesses must select an appropriate social network for taking sue of and attaing benefits from its application. An Investigation to Show the Effects of changing temperature in Yeast Respiration Essays

An Investigation to Show the Effects of changing temperature in Yeast Respiration Essays An Investigation to Show the Effects of changing temperature in Yeast Respiration Essay An Investigation to Show the Effects of changing temperature in Yeast Respiration Essay Yeast is one of the various single celled fungi that form masses of miniature circular or oval cells by budding. When placed in sugar solution the cells multiply and convert the sugar solution into alcohol and carbon dioxide. Yeasts are used as fermenting agents in baking, brewing and the making of wine and spirits. Brewers yeast is a rich source of vitamin B.Respiration in yeast is the production of the energy in the mitochondria of the cells. There are 2 types of respiration, Anaerobic and aerobic. At first aerobic respiration will be present but only until the oxygen that is already dissolved in the water. When the oxygen is used up anaerobic respiration will be present which produces the alcohol. The word equation for anaerobic respiration in yeast is:Glucose Alcohol + Carbon Dioxide + EnergyAnaerobic respiration is different in humans than it is in yeast because we break down glucose into lactic acid whereas yeast breaks it down into alcohol.Input Variabl esThere are several different variables in this experiment such as:The temperature of the waterAmount of WaterAmount of YeastAmount of sugarThe time it is left forIn this experiment I will be changing the temperature of the water.PredictionI predict that the hotter the water is the more carbon dioxide bubbles will be produced because the hot water will produce more kinetic energy so it increases the chance of collision. If we heat the sugar solution too much then the enzyme will change shape and it will become impossible for it to join with the sugar to form a complex. This is called denaturing the enzyme, I predict that this will happen at 70 80 C.PlanFirst I will set up the apparatus as show above. I will add 1.5 grams of sugar to 25ml of water and dissolve it. When we have the water at the correct temperature I will add the same amount of yeast to the sugar solution. When the water is at the correct temperature I will let it stand for 5 minutes. The first test I am going to do w ill be at normal tap temperature (20 C). I am going to increase the temperature by 15 C each time until I get to 80 C. I will measure the amount of respiration by counting the carbon dioxide bubbles entering the second test tube.Fair TestTo keep this investigation fair I am going to:* Keep the amount of sugar and yeast the same throughout the investigation* Keep the amount of water the same throughout the investigation* Let the solution stand for the same amount of time each time, five minutes* Add the yeast only when the sugar solution is at the correct temperatureSafetyThis investigation isnt very dangerous; I will only have to be careful when handling the hot water.AnalysisFrom my results you can see that the yeast reacts better between 35-50 C. This is because at 20 C the water was too cold to give the enzyme any energy. At 65 C there was not much reaction, I recorded an average of 2.5 bubbles of carbon dioxide. This was because the water was too hot and when the water is too ho t the enzyme deforms and changes shape as shown in my prediction diagram. It gave off a few carbon dioxide bubbles at the beginning before it changed shape so maybe at 50 60 C the yeast will react better as it didnt change shape straight away. At 80 C the water was far too hot, this would have changed the shape of the yeast straight away. I know this because we only counted one carbon dioxide bubble for the whole of the experiment.Quality of ResultsI think that my results were precise. I know this because I measured the yeast and sugar with electronic scales. The water was an accurate measurement as well as I used a measuring cylinder to measure it. Another measurement that was accurate was the temperature of the water as we used a thermometer so I knew when to add the yeast. The final results were another accurate measurement as I completed the same test three times. Was It A Fair Test? This test was fair because:* I used the same amount of yeast for each test* I used the same amoun t of water for each test* I counted the bubbles for the same period of time each test. The only thing that wasnt fair about the test was that I had to use different types of yeast. For the first and second tests I used yeast that was in small balls (not ground) and for the third test I used a powdered yeast but was still the same brand. I dont think this changed the outcome of my results much as we got similar results for the first, second and third test. The only difference that may have been was that the ground yeast started to respire earlier as it was smaller, therefore easier to dissolve! Another reason that could have made my test unfair was that when the yeast was first added it was dormant and dehydrated. I had to wait for it to start to respire, but this was the case in all the tests so in a way it was fair.Accuracy of MeasurementsAll of my measurements were accurate. This was because I used an electronic set of scales to weigh the yeast and the sugar. Another reason why my test was accurate was that we used a thermometer to check the temperature that is an accurate means of measuring heat. It would have been even more accurate if we used an electronic thermometer.Improvements to PlanThe only major improvement that I think would have been useful would be to increase the temperature by only 5 C each time instead of 15 C. This would help us to get a more accurate measurement of when the yeast respires best. If I had more time I would have done this and would have been able to find the optimum temperature for the yeast. Another improvement would have been to measure the amount of carbon dioxide given off instead of counting the bubbles. This would have been a good improvement as bubble sizes change, they are never the same size.

Inflation Literature review Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1250 words - 1

Inflation - Literature review Example The markets had assumed that the debt by Euro zone was safe. This made the investors think that all members thereby making them willing to maintain debts even at low interest rates despite countries including Italy and Greece having high debt levels had backed them. After the credit crunching, the investors began being to be more skeptical about the European finances. The other unfortunate occurrence was that the European Union had no strategies in place to deal with the sudden panic. The diagram below shows some debt from Selected European countries between 2007 and 2010. Pettinger on the economics journal of October 2011, tried to analyze the Euro economic crisis critically where he applied a single currency meant that several of the solutions regarding economic problems could not be used. The most difficult task is to reduce the government borrowing levels while managing lower unemployment and economic recovery. He studied several European economies including Greece, Ireland and Portugal and found the following problems. Pettinger best-suggested solution was currency devaluation. This refers to the reduction in the value of exchange rates .This would see regaining of competitiveness, reduction of budget deficit, increase employment rates, and aid in economic recovery. Since economic recovery is the key to reduction in budget deficit. He suggested that Countries should stop the use of the Euro and maintain their own currency. Most countries agree that the renewal of the economic growth is vital in saving the Euro (Pettinger, 2012; Pg. 68). The obstacle is that the effects of steps such as having a banking union, the recently agreed rescue plan may have positive effects to the banking system but may not have any effect to raise the competitiveness in the region’s economies. The second option was inflation, where the country should try to boost

Social desirability effect Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 500 words

Social desirability effect - Essay Example Field study is one of the methods employed by researchers in studying human behavior. Field studies are undertaken in a natural setting rather in a structured environment (Kitayama & Cohen, 2010, p. 220). It involves a naturalistic observation wherein researchers discreetly observe behaviors that occur in a natural setting. Field study also entails observation of individual’s reactions to stimuli or events designed by researchers in the natural setting (Kitayama & Cohen, 2010, p. 220). This particular method of study is interesting as it offers an in-depth detail of a social phenomenon. However, the results derived from these studies fail to provide objectivity as it relies on the researcher’s judgment. The means to improve such method become an interesting area of study. Field study can serve as an insightful means of defining group behaviors. Wimmer and Dominick (2010) stressed that field studies possess an advantage of being nonreactive. Reactivity refers to the effe cts of the subject’s awareness of being observed or measured on her or his behavior. The objectivity of studies often suffers from subject’s awareness of being observed (p. 225). Sevilla, Ochave, Punsalan, Regala, and Uriarte (1992) reiterated that there are variables in social psychology that cannot be explored through experimentation (p. 154). Thus, field study offers insights into these phenomena. It presents a great breadth and depth of understanding unattainable by quantitative researches (Shepard, 2004, p. 50). Shepard (2004) stressed that findings in a particular situation may not be applicable to other situations. In addition, most field studies fail to employ standardized measuring devices. Researchers rely on subjective interpretation and judgment. The researcher’s judgment is vulnerable to biases and blind spots (p. 50).

In doing so, the paper will explain how advertisement in minority-targeted magazines and mainstream-targeted magazine by establishing the similarities and differences there in. Ideally, advertising produces magazines that target diverse audience. In the recent times, the number of minority-targeted magazines have been increasing subject to the appreciation, increase, and buying power of the minority. Indeed, advertisers have realized the potential in the minority and have since tailored different advertisements targeting their needs, perception, and potential. The frequency and quantity of minority-targeted magazines have led to an intrusive and consistent mode of advertising that the minority cannot afford to disregard. Some of the minority-targeted magazines include the Black Enterprise magazine, African American Golfers Digest, Black Collegian Magazine, and Black Men Magazine. Feminism in Fifth Business

Feminism in Fifth Business The role of women in the novel Fifth Business is essential and fundamental to the character development and spiritual meaning that Dunny seeks throughout the novel and whether they shape and influence his life in a positive or negative way. Dunny remains in the background essential to the action but not a principal, interlaced in a thread of numerous subplots and themes. Dunny peruses his passion for hagiology which sets him on a journey of discovery through a path of materialism and spirituality plagued by his consistent guilt which carries an underlined theme throughout the novel. The importance of women is consistent throughout the novel since his upbringing in the town Depthford onwards and we will see these women sculpting, damaging or setting him free. The roles of the women will be analyzed through the view of Dunny and how they contributed to his development. The novel Fifth Business which is written by Robert Davies and although they are entirely unalike in character similar experiences enclosed in a fictional reworking of arrangements and situations are consistent with the life of Robert Davies specifically with a similar childhood in a small town in Ontario which give you an account of his thoughts, emotions and experiences in a deeper sense. First, Dunnys mother is a determined and controlling person with a strong and strict Calvinist belief who raises Dunny accordingly which fits her role as a protecting and loving mother who likes to help others, until their situation drastically changes when the focus of her love changes and isolation coupled with resentment builds after the snowball incident with the Dempsters family. This is evident, when Dunny states I began to believe that I was more responsible for the birth of Paul Dempster than were his parents, []. Part of that dreadful fate would undoubtedly be rejection by my mother (Davies 17). Undeniably, his mothers love and focus begins to change attention towards the Dempsters family instead of her own household which initiates Dunnys feeling of isolation and begins to feel resentment for his mother who is unable to provide consolation for his adolescent heart. Furthermore, Dunnys mother continues the passage of isolation and it is particularly felt when Dunny responds Being unofficial watchdog to the Dempsters family was often a nuisance to me and did nothing for my popularity (Davies 22). Obviously, the feeling of isolation is felt by Dunny and it affects his social life with his friends and himself as a person in the future. Next, Dunnys mother imposes fear on his juvenile youth and the resentment for his mother arguably evolves to hate when he is severely beaten by his mother and replies I have been very miserable since-miserable not for an hour but for months on end-but I can still feel that hours misery in its perfect desolation, if I am fool enough to call it up in my mind (Davies 29). Consequently, this incident causes an atmosphere of tension throughout the rest of the novel whenever Dunnys mother is mentioned and he instead turns his attention and love towards Mrs. Dempster. In the long run, Dunnys mother is responsible for his deep isolation, his stance on women, and the insecurities around them which boundaries his feelings and emotion s throughout his life and does anything only through obligation and nothing out of desire for himself which is the reason for his life being miserable and despiteful leaving him unable to form lasting relationships with women and relatively unattached to his mother and women in general. Second, Mary Demspter is considered Dunnys first love and a simple women and more so after the incident with the snowball which is the reason Dunny carries the plague of guilt with him throughout the novel but in essence the guilt remains with himself alone which is a weak cause to hold it against Mary and claim it as her role for she is not the reason it occurred. On the contrary, with that established let us not overlook that Mary plays arguable one of the most vital roles in the novel as Dunnys inspiration for the path of mythology, saints and longing for knowledge and inner spirituality. This begins, with the second miracle when Mary has supposedly raised Willie from his deathbed and Dunnys response to himself is For me, Willies recall from death is, and will always be, Mrs. Dempsters second miracle (Davies 57). Undeniably, to Dunny this is seen as a complete miracle whether anyone believes him or not and will commence his journey of mythology and validating Mary as a saint. Furt hermore, is apparent with the first miracle that occurs but is not known until later when Dunny reencounters Joel Surgeoner and discuses the miracle with him and Joel acknowledges, He worked through that women, and she is a blessed saint, for what she did for me-I mean it as I say it-was a miracle (Davies 135). Clearly, this acceptance of Mary as a saint without a doubt in the eyes of Joel who is forever changed since that night leaves a strong impression on Dunny and motivates him in continuing his direction in the path of mythology and to comprehend the complications and serious possibilities of Mary being a saint. In addition, the third and last miracle is during the war when Dunny is about to lose consciousness and during this time has visions of Mary and her being the Madonna statue but does not fully acknowledge it till later in the novel when he contemplates to himself that, [H]er miraculous appearance to me when I was at the uttermost end of my endurance at Passchendaele (Da vies 161). Without doubt, Dunny is talking within the context of the 3 miracles and confirms to himself that the vision of Mary was the third and final miracle and might be all the proof that he needs to convince himself that it is so but his conviction also plays a destructive influence yet on the other hand brings him academic and personal growth and pleasure. On the whole, Mary plays a critical role providing the three miracles that occur and essentially changes his life profoundly while recognizing her as wholly religious and his experience with her offers him a greater insight about the nature of a life lived with the knowledge of the presence of the mythic world in the actual world and reassures his childhood interest in mythology and saints to come to the forefront of his life and career. Third, Diana Marfleet plays a significant role in the novel as his first meaningful and realistic love but more importantly gently guides him in his self-transformation with the change of his name and being with her made him realize what he really wanted in life and she helped him mentally with the damage that his mother has caused. Plainly, it is clear when his self-transformation begins as Diana is taking care of him and he receives the news of death of his family during the war due to the influenza epidemic of early 1918 and Dunnys remark to himself was, It was years before I thought of the death of my parents as anything other than a relief; in my thirties I was able to see them as real people (Davies 78). It seems that Dunny is finally able to escape his mother even though it was through death it was something he has been longing for and finds great freedom in it while finding closure at the same time during the care of Diana. Also, Dunnys time with Diana helps his figure out wh at he wants to do with his life now that he is physically and mentally able with the care of Diana by his side and the freedom he has just received. Distinctly, being with Diana has made him think about himself for once in life and made him realize that he loves Diana but is not in love with her and that is when Dunny mentions to himself That decision, made at that time, has shaped my life and doubtless in some ways it has warped it, but I still think I knew what was best for me. In the long periods of rest in the hospital I thought as carefully as I could about my situation (Davies 85). Certainly, he is referring to the decision he has made with Diana and how things would not work out between them in the future because she is too similar to his mother which he just got rid of and does not want another. Moreover, to complete his transformation she decides that he should change his name to Dunny which mentally gives him the psychological push to complete and realize his transformatio n into a new person when his reply was I liked the idea of a new name; it suggested new freedom and new personality (Davies 90). Unmistakably, Dunny has taken a liking to his new name which was changed from Dunstable to Dunny and enjoys the freedom and the possibilities that it holds and he remains grateful for what she has made him realize and done for him which no other women has so far. To sum up, it is ironic that consequently Diana who was the one to sever the link between Dunny and his mother by renaming him does not end up marring him and more so because his mothers full name was Fiona Dunstable Ramsay. Nevertheless, his relationship and time with Diana has matured him and broaden his scope of life, understanding and culminated in his rebirth and renaming. In conclusion, the role of women have been extensive and necessary throughout the novel and has matured and turned Dunny into the man he is today although his mother has been the root of the problems in his life the majority of the women have been a positive influence on Dunny and will forever change his outlook on women and life. Dunny has remained and fulfilled his role as Fifth Business by bringing resolution or meaning to the story or merely by observing or explaining it. Throughout the novel he was always the odd man out and continually searching for meaning and significance in life whether it be from his mother who molded him during his childhood, Mary who gave him a lasting connection with the mythology, magic, and the inner spirituality of one self and life or Diana who gracefully opens and heals his heart and mind regarding women and himself again. Ultimately it is an incredible quest for knowledge and happiness which he has finally found even though it was a long and tiring journey with many sacrifices.

The Power And The Glory :: essays research papers

The Power and Glory writing assignment   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã¢â‚¬Å"The spirit is willing but the flesh is weak†.(Matthew 26:41) These words of Jesus are thematic in both the novel, The Power and the Glory, by Graham Greene, and the poem, â€Å"Batter my heart, three-personed God†, by John Donne. Both the whiskey priest and the speaker of the poem are involved in a battle between their sinful flesh and their spirit, which seeks the Divine. They also admit their sin and commit themselves to God. In both the novel and the poem, the authors use similar paradoxes to describe the character’s relationship with God while the search for holiness takes each on a different path. The speaker and the whiskey priest describe themselves as sinners, yielding to temptation. The speaker of the poem says, â€Å"But I am betrothed unto your enemy†(ln.10), showing the speaker is subdued by the devil. The priest, a drunkard with a child, thinks of himself as a transgressor and a disgrace to the Church. While in the prison, the priest says to the pious woman, â€Å"But I’m a bad priest†¦I know from experience-how much beauty Satan carried down with him when he fell.†(p.130) When he is arrested the priest says to a soldier, â€Å"You mustn’t think they are like me†¦It’s just that I’m a bad priest.†(p.191). In addition to recognizing their betrayal of God, they believe that a sacred life is the ultimate victory. The speaker confesses, â€Å"Yet dearly I love you and would be loved fain.†(ln.9) The priest also desires to love God above all, â€Å"He knew now at the end there was only one thing that counted – to be a saint.†(p.210) However, each character pursues the Divine in a different way. Even though the whiskey priest perceives himself as a sinner, his way of life resembles the good of the Holy Spirit. The priest resembles Jesus in many places in the novel. The prison scene is very much like the Last Supper, when Jesus said to his apostles that one of them would betray him. The priest thinks, â€Å"Surely one of these people will betray me first.†(p.128) He also cleans the pails of the cells in the prison just as Jesus washes the apostles’ feet. The night before he is executed the priest prays alone as Jesus did in the garden. The priest embarks on a mission to keep his religion alive in Mexico while helping the individuals he meets, and he finally dies because of his faith and sense of duty.
